Principal’s Update #1 Term 1

On behalf of all staff at KPS, I want to extend a warm welcome to all new and existing families to the 2024 school year. Over the last few weeks, we have been busily preparing our classrooms eagerly awaiting our students return. We aim to continue building on our successes over the last few years and making 2024 truly remarkable and special. There will be some exciting new changes to our whole school reading approach, as well as continued upgrades to buildings, playgrounds and the physical environment. Our school community continues to grow with a massive influx of new enrolments over the past weeks. I have been very impressed with how well our students have settled in over the first two weeks, despite the hot weather it has been a seamless transition. I want to thank our community for the continued support.

Pre Kindy Grand Opening
Our new Pre-Kindy service opened on Wednesday with a great turnout of families joining us for some fun and the opportunity to get to know some new friends. We are excited to offer this exciting opportunity for our community. It is our aim to provide our next generation of students with a taste of school life. Please email Samantha.higgins3@education.wa.edu.au for more information.

Great news for KPS
We have been successful in securing a grant from the Telethon Grant Program to partner with Kids are Kids to offer the services of an Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, Physiotherapist and Clinical Psychologist to our kindy and pre-primary students. These wonderful people have set up a clinic in Room 13 and started today. We will continue to have OT, and speech for our Yr 1-6 students through our current partnerships with Fremantle Speech, Down South Therapy and Curtin University.

Heat
It has been a very hot start to the 2024 school year with three days already reaching above the 40 degree mark. In instances of extreme heatwaves, we enact our hot weather policy and provide lunchtime games indoors. We ask that all students bring a hat and a water bottle to school each day and stay hydrated. Our staff are on the lookout for students exhibiting any heat related stress. Fingers crossed, we might see some cooler weather on the horizon.

Pupil Free Day
Thursday 22 February (Week 4) will be a pupil free day, we realise that this might seem a bit odd, but it was the only day we could secure the services of renowned educator and explicit instruction expert John Fleming to come and visit our school from Victoria. We are very fortunate to secure the services of Mr Fleming who has been working with our teachers to enhance their practice of delivering an effective explicit lesson design. Mr Fleming will also be at KPS on Wednesday 21 February observing all our classes and providing crucial feedback to our teachers.

Playgroup at KPS
Our playgroup service is operating in the OSH building. This  initiative aims to bring our youngest community members into our school to make some new friends and enjoy playing together. It is also an opportunity for parents/carers to meet some new families in a casual and friendly environment. Children aged 0-5 are welcome to attend. Please email Samantha.higgins3@education.wa.edu.au for more information.

New OHSC – Their Care
Our new out of hours school care provider has started operating onsite at KPS. It is a great opportunity for your children to have a structured day care experience without having to leave the school grounds. Please contact them directly with them for more information on1300 072 410 or infor@theircare.com.au
