Teaching and Learning at Kelmscott Primary School

At Kelmscott Primary School, teaching and learning is our core business. We deliver the Western Australian Curriculum through a consistent, evidence-based approach designed to ensure every student is supported, challenged and able to make strong progress.

Our teachers work collaboratively in Professional Learning Teams to plan, assess and moderate student learning. Student achievement is monitored using a range of school-based and system data, with teachers using this evidence to identify student needs, adjust teaching and provide targeted support and extension.

Across KPS, we have a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, while providing rich learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum.

Explicit Teaching

Kelmscott Primary School has a consistent whole-school approach to explicit teaching. Lessons are purposeful, structured and responsive to student learning needs.

Teachers clearly communicate what students are learning, why they are learning it and what success looks like. Our explicit teaching approach incorporates the gradual release of responsibility through I Do, We Do, You Do, moving students from teacher modelling and guided practice towards confident, independent application.

Teachers regularly check for understanding throughout lessons, provide timely feedback and respond when students require additional support or further challenge.

Meeting the Needs of Every Learner

We believe every student can learn and make progress. Teachers differentiate learning to respond to students' individual needs, including providing intervention, support and extension where required.

We take collective responsibility for the progress and achievement of every student. We know our students, know our impact and respond when learning is not progressing as expected. Equally, when students are ready to move beyond expected achievement, we ensure they are challenged and extended.

Our whole-school approaches, programs and teaching practices are informed by research, evidence and the needs of our students. Consistency across classrooms ensures students experience clear expectations, common approaches and high-quality teaching throughout their journey at Kelmscott Primary School.
